Tim Smart
Chief Executive
King’s College Hospital foundation trust

Tim Smart is Chief Executive of a large London teaching hospital, where he has increased the focus on patient experience, safety, and on the basics of high quality performance. His experience before joining the NHS in 2008 was as an international business leader at BT for 20 years, and as a general management graduate recruit at Shell for 9 years prior to that.  He is a Trustee of two children’s charities and has been an independent director of a financial services company in the USA. His degree is in Economics.

Tim describes himself as a values based leader, which gives him confidence during times of challenge and uncertainty. In particular he values integrity and inclusion, equal opportunities, and a passion for outcome based hard work. He leads through establishing personal relationships with leaders within his organisation, because he finds a viral marketing approach more effective than complex systems in flat organisations.

Within the NHS he is engaged in a number of initiatives to improve inclusion, to develop the next generation of leaders, and to improve management engagement with the medical profession. He is a member of the Foundation Trust Network Board, and is on the Members Council of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and also the King’s Health Partners Board.

Tim is married, has one son and lives in London and Hampshire.
